Where Are They Now? Meet COSSPP Alum Kylar Barrett

What have you been up to since you graduated?

I graduated with a Bachelors in Sociology in Spring 2021. Since graduation I’ve been stationed at Fort Rucker, Alabama and am a 2LT in the army. I’m about to promote to 1LT and am currently flying the AH-64E (Apache). This is the world’s most high tech and weaponized helicopter made. I leave in March, 2022 to go to Katterbach, Germany for 3 years.

How did your degree in social science help inform your path?

My degree has helped with organization, communication with people, and the ability to learn from other’s views/experiences. I’m instructed by the world’s best pilots, maintainers, and leaders in aviation. The experiences from all my classes and subjects I learned have helped me understand people more. I think back on my SERE school training (look it up if you have the chance) and those times made my really appreciate what I have in life. During that time I was able to remember all the things I’ve learned through my history courses at FSU and really appreciate/feel empathetic for POWs (prisoners of war).

What is your favorite memory or spot on campus?

My favorite memory on campus is the block party that FSU has. It was a time where the street I lived on my senior year (Madison street) came alive. I was able to visit all the amazing local spots while listening to the school band, bands hired by FSU, and see various important staff/representatives on campus like President Thrasher.
