Graduate Student Spotlight: Elizabeth Ruff from the Department of Geography

What department are you a graduate student in?

Why did you decide to go to graduate school?

I decided to pursue my doctoral degree when I was job hunting after my master’s degree. All the positions that I was excited by and could envision myself doing required a PhD, so here I am.

Did your interests change throughout your program?

I would say they have expanded more than they have changed. I have had such a diversity of experiences through my degree that there are so many more topics for me to be excited about, and graduate school has given me the tools to approach my original interests from varying perspectives.

What do you want to do with your advanced degree?

I am all about applied work. If I can help solve a real-world problem in some way, regardless of scale or impact, count me in!
